Find Your Guide/ How to Choose the Right Personal Development Mentor (#363)

You don’t need a mentor because you’re weak — you need one because you’re going somewhere. Growth is faster, clearer, and way more meaningful when someone a few steps ahead reaches back and says, “Come on, I’ll show you.” Guidance, not to copy or replicate.

Why a Mentor Matters More Than Motivation

Motivation can hype you up for a few days. A mentor can change your life for years.

A good podcast can inspire you.
A mentor can shape you.

We grow best in connection. Humans weren’t designed to level up alone. We’re wired for guidance, challenge, accountability, and support from someone who sees our potential even when we temporarily forget it exists.

A mentor isn’t just someone who teaches you.
A mentor is someone who believes in you, stretches you, and won’t let you sabotage your own future.

What a Personal Development Mentor Actually Is (and Isn’t)

A mentor is not a life coach in a suit who charges $500 an hour to tell you to drink water and visualize success. Good thing I am a Personal Development Coach or this could be embarrassing, right?! LOL

A mentor is someone who has:

  • Been where you're trying to go

  • Failed enough times to know what not to do

  • Grown enough to share the shortcuts

  • A heart for helping, not just talking

They're not there to control your life.
They're there to widen it.

They’re not your boss, therapist, or cheer squad — though they may feel like all three at times.
They’re a mirror, a compass, and a silent force behind your transformation.

Where to Find One (Hint: They’re Not Hiding, You Just Haven’t Been Looking Right)

Mentors don’t show up with a flashing neon sign that says “I am your person.”
They’re already around you — in classrooms, communities, workplaces, gyms, spiritual circles, masterminds, and sometimes right in your friend circle (just disguised as “the wise one”).

Here’s where to start looking:
✅ People already living the life you want — not just talking about it
✅ Someone who inspires growth, not dependency
✅ Someone who challenges your excuses, not comforts them
✅ Someone whose values match yours, not just their achievements

Your perfect mentor may not be famous.
They may not have 100k followers.
But they will have results, integrity, and clarity.                                                                I am a Mentor, an Accountability Partner and much much more.                        Inquire within.

The world has no shortage of influencers.
But true mentors? Rare.
Which is why they’re priceless.

How to Know They’re the Right Fit

Ask yourself:

1. Do they walk their talk?
Wisdom without embodiment is just noise.

2. Do they stretch me, not shame me?
A mentor should call you higher, not make you feel small.

3. Do I feel inspired around them?
Not impressed… activated.

4. Do they care about who I become — not just what I accomplish?
If they only care about numbers, they’re a manager, not a mentor.

How to Approach a Mentor the Right Way

Wrong approach:
“Hey, can you mentor me? Also, can you fix my entire life by Friday?”

Right approach:
Show effort first. Bring questions. Bring commitment. Bring evidence that you’re already moving.

Mentors aren’t looking for perfection.
They’re looking for hunger.

Someone who shows up, applies what they learn, and doesn’t need hand-holding every 10 minutes.

Your job isn’t to convince them to lead you.
Your job is to demonstrate that you’re leadable.

Warning: A Real Mentor Won’t Always Feel Comfortable

Growth is uncomfortable. A good mentor will ask things like:

  • “Why are you settling?”

  • “Is that your truth, or your fear talking?”

  • “What excuse do you keep telling yourself?”

  • “If you already believed in yourself, what would you do next?”

If you only want encouragement, find a fan.
If you want transformation, find a mentor.

Final Thought

The right mentor doesn’t give you the answers — they help you become the person who can create them.

They won’t walk the path for you.
But they will walk it with you.

And the day you're living the life you once feared to imagine, you’ll understand one thing deeply:

You weren’t meant to grow alone.

Shameless plug, ME!!!!
